Story:

John Smith's alarm didn't go off yesterday for his brother's big wedding day.
Smith sped across the state to make the five hour drive to the chapel.

All of smith's family and friends were there to support his brother except for him.

"I was getting ready for my big day, but I couldn't stop thinking about where John was," Andrea Smith said. "But I was sure he was going to be there."

Smith wasn't able to leave his home until four hours before the wedding.

"I still had to put on my tux, take a shower, and pick up the cake," Smith said. "i was able to trim off a good two hours because I took a short cut."

Smith's shortcut was through the roughest terrain in the state and he faced many struggles.

"I went through woods, cities, rain and many different roads to get the chapel in time," Smith said. "I am so glad I made it and was able to see my sister's big day."

Portfolio Analysis

1.

a. Name of photographer – Josh Birnbaum
b. General focus of portfolio (photoj, sports, stories, etc.)- Portraits and snapshots of people. Wheel chaired people.
c. List three problems that the judges noted with the portfolio – The lack of activity in the photos. Bad timing and Faces the subjects are making. Transition and content in the portfolio is consistent.
d. List two things the judge’s like- the photographer’s ability to get right into the action. The large amount humor in the photos.
e. What is your overall impression of the photographer? What did you like or not like?
I think the photographer isn’t very serious in what he does and only takes pictures as a hobby. I also think he’s a very immature photographer and you can tell by the way he set up his portfolio and took his photos. I didn’t like his set of the portfolio or the photos at all.

a. Name of photographer – Justin Mott
b. General focus of portfolio (photoj, sports, stories, etc.)- Pacific Rim and Eastern Hemisphere stories.
c. List three problems that the judges noted with the portfolio – The lack of a story. Portfolio building.  Focus of photos.
d. List two things the judge’s like- the point of view the photographer shot at. The basis of photography skills the photographer has.
e. What is your overall impression of the photographer? What did you like or not like? He’s very concerned about what is happening in other parts of the world like poverty and starvation and wants to spread awareness through his photography. I really enjoyed the amount of reality present in his photos.

a. Name of photographer – Jordan Murph
b. General focus of portfolio (photoj, sports, stories, etc.)- Sports
c. List three problems that the judges noted with the portfolio – Inconsistency in strength of photos. Irrelevance of some the photos. Weakness of the photo stories.
d. List two things the judges like- Composition of the photos.  Lighting in some of the photos.
e. What is your overall impression of the photographer? What did you like or not like?
I feel like he’s a very good photographer but when he trys too hard, you can tell in his photos and his photos suffer. I loved the sports pictures in the beginning but I hated the photo stories.

 2.

a. What did the judges note as strengths as they were critiquing it?
Portfolio set up. Composition. Timing of the shot. Ability to catch the moment. Right in the middle of the action.

b. What do you see as strengths? Do you see any weaknesses?

Strengths: All the photos were somewhat strong and were taken in good quality. He was able to get in the actions. The patterns he constantly takes photographs of. He is able to photograph movement and actions very well.

Weaknesses: Some of the photos could’ve been better if they were more in focus. Some aspects of the photos make the photo worse.

3.

 a. Briefly describe the process the judges went through in deciding the winner.

The judges looked at the portfolios individually and ruled them out. They talk about what they like and don’t like about the portfolio and they come to a consensus. They fight for the portfolio they want.

PART 2:
 1. Describe one photo that you agree with the judges on. Explain why you and the judges do or do not like it.
The no pro/no college 1st place. I really like that tennis picture because like judge said, it has large amounts of emotion present. It makes you want to jump for joy. I also like the contrast of the red from the background.

2. Describe one photo that you do NOT agree with the judges on. Explain why you think the judges are wrong.

I disagree with judges about the picture of year. I think the no pro/no college photo should have won because it had the emotion as well as action which the others didn’t. The judges also have to take into consideration that the photographer was a high schooler.
