Self Portraits And Portraits Part: 1

Tips:
Break the Rules of Composition
Alter Your Perspective
Take Unfocused Shots

Environmental Shots:

I really like these picture because I love musicians. These photographs show these people's passion for music that i share with them. I chose the flute photo because I am a flute player and it really resonates with me. I chose the violin photograph because I love street musician because they're really talented and they always amaze me.

Self portraits:

I picked both of these portraits because they both are dark but ten have a pop of light or color. I really like the photo above because he is hold up his hands as if he were setting a picture. Since he's a photographer, the portrait conveys a part of him. I really like the photo on the right because as the paintbrush moves across his face, color is left in it's path. This may convey that he's an artist and painting is what "adds color to his life." Both of the portraits say something about the subject and thats what I really enjoy about them.

Photo Shoot:

I plan on shooting my friend Victoria because she is very photogenic and she will be very willing to do what I ask her. I plan on visiting Zilker Park and the botanical garden there. Taking Photos in nature is something that will look and be great. I plan on taking picture at different levels to catch more of a variety throughout the photos. I want to take pictures of her spinning on the green at Zilker on a low shutter speed so I can see the motion.  I plan taking a list of the rules of photography so I refer to them throughout the shoot. I hope this will be beneficial in taking the maximum quality pictures I can take on this shoot. I also plan to adjust the shutter speed and ISO to see what kinds of different photos I can take while on the shoot.

Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO

F/2.8
 Aperture:
F/16

1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture?
The pupil of the eye.
2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture _____________, the higher the Aperture ________________.
The smaller the aperture the sees amount of light let into the lens, the higher the aperture the more amount of light let into the lens.
3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field?
The depth of field is affected by the aperture by determining which objects in the picture will be in focus and how much in focus they will be in. The smaller the aperture the more all objects will be in focus. the larger the aperture, the less the objects background will be and the more focused the objects in the foreground will be.

Low Shutter Speed
Shutter Speed:
1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game?

the advantages are that you can more usable photos because higher ISO photographs are taken quicker. Also because of the low amount of light a higher ISO will give you a better quality photograph all together.
2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?
You want to use the lowest ISO when you have plenty of light so you can get the Highest quality of picture.

3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?
When there isn't enough light or you want to get cash shot you use a high ISO.

List the aperture settings available on this camera.
2.8, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 16, 22
List the shutter speed settings available on this camera.
1 sec, 1/60 sec, 1/4000 sec
List the ISO settings available on this camera.
100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 12800, 25600
High Shutter Speed

1. If you were assigned to shoot at Bulldogs and Hotdogs night, which was a few months ago, what shutter speeds do you think you would have to shoot at the following events that night I would like you to answer the question for the following two situations:

At the beginning while the sun was still up and the courtyard had reasonable good light

a.) a booth in the middle of the yard near the TreeSlow Shutter Speed
b.) a food booth outside under one of the big red awningsHigh

2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed (these are found at #5 on the Shutter Speed website. Explain how each works - DO NOT COPY AND PASTE, use your own words.

Manual: The camera automatically set the shutter speed and aperture for you.
Aperture priority: You set the aperture and then the camera sets the shutter speed for you.
Shutter Priority: You set the shutter speed and then the aperture is set automatically.

Love and Loss

1. What emotions did you feel as you worked your way through these images?
As I first started going through the photos, I felt uncertainness because I didn't know what the picture were going to be but soon after, I found out. Then I knew what these photos were about and I felt sorrow and depression from looking at the picture of this poor woman slowly deteriorating. After going through the photos, I had a feeling of loss but at the same tim happiness.

2. The photographer said this: "These photographs do not define us, but they are us." What do you think about this comment now that you have looked at the photos?
I think it's so true and so inspiring to people going through the same thing. A lot of people who have loved ones with cancer soon only think about the disease and not giving their loved one the best life they can get. This quote shows that the cancer didn't effect how they loved each other but it did capture their last experiences together.

3. Do you think you could shoot photos like this if you were in this situation?
No. I wouldn't because i could never get myself to look at them. Losing a loved on is not something I've gone through left but I don't think I will handle it very well so I  wouldn't want to document it.

4. If you could write Angelo a letter, what would you say to him?
I would tell him how amazing and inspiring to me. His emotional strength has allowed him to capture his love and loss in a beautiful array of photos. He has inspired me to be stronger through the hard times in my life and love with all of my heart.

Abandoned Theme Parks

1. Tell me which amusement park featured in the two articles that you would like to visit and take your camera along and what about that park made you want to go there. Write at least a paragraph.
If I could visit a amusement park in these articles I would choose the one in Prypiat, ukraine because it seem the most mysterious. I've always though Chernobyl was so interesting so seeing the amusement park that was effected by it would be zoo cool. It also seems kind of dangerous because of the nuclear levels that are still up there. The fact that people can only be in the town for a few hours at a time would give a thrill to be there.  Also, since the town was evacuated I think it would be awesome to see how the amusement park was left.

2. Post one photo from that park. You may use

the photos from the link, or you can google an entirely new photo. I would prefer to see a photo of the park in disrepair and not a photo of it when it was still operating.

3. Think of at least FIVE other unusual places you think would be of interest to photographers. List them.
1. The Devil's bridge
2. The Rock Of Guatape
3. Gloworm Caves
4. The Minister's Tree house
5. Moon Bridge In Taiwan

4. Use google or another search engine to research ONE of your five places and see if anyone has already started documenting that place. If you find that someone has already started - post at least one photo of their work.

Devil's Bridge

5. Write a paragraph about why you think that it would be fun to document that location. Tell me what interests you about that place and what kind of photos you could expect to take there.

This location is magnificent and it also makes a great photo shoot opportunity. The bridge and it's reflection on the water make a perfect circle so it's really interesting to look at. What else interests me is that during the spring, the trees bloom with flowers so the beige looks like a paradise. I would like to take seasonal photos of this place throughout the year to show how much it changes. I would also like to take pictures of the bridge closer up and the rock sticking out of the water. These close up picture would catch the detail of these pieces.
6. Tell me what it would take for you to go and take photos at your location. What would you need as far as equipment goes, travel plans, expenses you might encounter and what laws you would have to take into consideration to take photos at your spot.
I would need a macro, distance, and basic lens along with a Cannon 60D camera. The plane ticket for the trip, and probably money to see the bridge, pay for food and hotels would also be a must. I would need to make sure not to disturb the peace of nature while taking my photographs and also make sure to be courteous to people at the bridge.

Africa

1. On your blog post your reactions to what you read and what you saw. How about 3-4 sentences.

A. I am just amazed with brandy's passion for all of these animals and for what he does. He has so much dedications he's willing to wait for days to get one photo. He also doesn't just photograph the animals, he has an emotional attachment and he cares about their well being. The purity and clarity of all the photos are amazing. The balance of a lot of the picture is great and is just naturally there.

2. Do a google image search for Nick Brandt, find your favorite photo and post it on your blog.

3. Describe it and tell me why its your favorite.
The photo shows a lion mother and her cub looking off into the rocky and dry plain of Africa. I really like it because of the view of the landscape in the background. The amount of substance in this photograph is remarkable.

4. What rules of photography are evident in the photos you selected, be sure to explain the rule to me?
The rule of third is evident because of the placement of the lioness and her cub. Balance is in this picture because of the offset placement of the background and the placement of the lions on different side so the photograph looks nice, even, and balanced.

Do a google/wikipedia search for Nick Brandt

5. What kind of camera and lens does he use and why is this important?
He uses a Pentax 67II with only two fixed lenses. He uses these because it makes him get close to the animals when photographs them. He believes it "make a huge difference in his ability to reveal their personality."
6. What is his reason for taking these photos?
He wants to take them animals photos because he wants to catch them in their state of being before they aren't any more. He know that soon these animals will be extinct and he want to show people that animals have an equal right to live just as humans do.
7. What is his hope by taking these type of photos?
To reveal how much of a story these animals have so people will hopefully help to stop the poaching in africa to help these animals.

"You wouldn't take a portrait of a human being from a hundred feet away and expect to capture their spirit; you'd move in close." -Nick Brandt

Great Black and White Photographers: Part 3

1.) What first caught your eye while looking at your photographers photos? Is there something in particular about their photos that made you want to choose them? Post the images with your writing.
Picture 1

The things that caught my eye about the photographer's photos were the stories they told. The people and their expressions gave me a story about who they were, what they did, and how their life was. The other thing that caught my eye was the amount of purity in the photograph. The purity of the photograph makes the subject look stunning. I just love how Ansel Adams make the mood of all of his photos so calm. He shows a perfect example of the purity in the tree photograph. Walker Evans and Eugene Atget are examples of the photographers that take photos that capture a story.

Picture 2

2.) Look at those 2 photos you posted last time in the assignment Great Black and White Photographers Part 2. Use your five senses to tell me more about those photos. Answer them on your blog.

Picture 1: A. I see the aged stone of the statue and bench about to crumble under all the years and years of stress they have been put through. The ground is covered in an almost white layer of dust. I turn and notice the bushes. Unkept and out of control, they're leaves growing out in every direction. The sent of the untreated stone comes to my nose and I sneeze from the musty fumes. I smell the fresh life like sent of the bushes. I can smell the sweet scent of the flowers down the trail they're smell soft and wonderful. The sounds of bird enter my ears, their sweet chirps and songs make me smile. I can hear the whoosh of the wind, strong and mighty. The noise of two kids playing in the nearby garden catch my attention. They're  laughing and playing. The bitter taste of the dust hits my tongue and makes me choke. I can taste the sweet apples from the trees in the garden, their fruit perfectly ripe. I taste the blue berries from the over grown bushes their pungent taste sticking to my ease buds long after I eat them. I can feel the large amount of sorrow and abandonment from the poor garden. It's old memories keeping it alive, the garden has no one left for everyone has left it. But the garden still stand for the memories are too great to let go. The garden misses all of the friends and family that used to gather there but also realizes that memories were made to remembered not relived.

Picture 2:
A. I see the old and distressed tree lurking in the shadows. The water is a murky brown with barley any life to it. The ancient church looks as if it will crumble any second. The sweet smell of bread wafts over from the nearby houses. The water's pungent smell gags me and smells like death. As I move closer to the church, the smell of candles surrounds me. The heavy dark sound of the church bells fills my ears. At the same time, the crows in the nearby trees squawk and fly away. The sounds of water splashing catches my attention and I look to see two boys skipping rocks across the river. The taste of dirt and mud fills my mouth as I draw closer to the river. The thick taste of wax from candles makes me cringe and pull away. The taste of water falls on my tongue as it begins to rain. I feel nothing. The feeling of loss. loss of everything. But at the same time I feel hope. The singing of the church choir bring a warm and happy feeling my mind.

3.) Finally, what would you like to create to show the world your great photographer. Ideas include, posters, power points, a blog, etc. You tell me what you would like to create so we can come up with a plan to share your thoughts and ideas about your photographer with your classmates and with the rest of the school

A. I would love to create a college of a theme of pictures I've taken or a portfolio of all my work. Just something to layout my work all right next to each other. I also think doing a huge poster of just my work would be fun too.

Photo Mural Project

1. What theme that we could take here at school could we do a series of these panels to place around the school?
A cool theme to do at school would be nature. We have so many gardens and plant life here on campus that it would be great way to establish a life-like feeling in the hallways. I really think it would bring some color to the campus.

2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones?
I think the mural should be open to all camera because it will create a diversity in the photographs.

3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus?
We could put the mural outside of the academic wing or over in the halls of the academic wing.

I think a good idea would to mount the photos on hard boards because they will be more sturdy.

Academic Shoot reflection and critique

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?

I was very  hard to get a rule when people are in the classroom setting. People move around the classroom so if you saw a shot you could take and someone moved you it was ruined. It's just very hard because you have act quickly when you take photos in the classrooms.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.

I thought of holding the camera the most because I wanted to take move picture vertically than horizontally. When I took picture in the IPC class, I was able to do this.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?

I would try to follow the rules better than I did. I was more focused on other aspects such as the subject and the focus that I didn't follow the rules as well as I could've.

4. What things would you do the same?

I would go to the same place because there were a lot of photo opportunities in the classrooms I visited.

5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?

Rule of thirds. It easy to get because all you have to do it move the camera so the subject is place in the corner quadrants.

6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?

I feel balance is the hardest to capture because you can't just think about balance when you take a picture. a lot of times its just there. so when you go look back through them you realize a lot of good pictures you could've used are unbalanced. Also, when you try to balance a picture, by the time it's balanced, the photo opportunity is usually gone.

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?

simplicity. I can look up examples of pictures with simplicity and then look up the the definition of the rule.

Academic Shoot

Balance
BALANCE:
 1. I don't think I followed the rule very well because the ramp in the photo makes the picture not as balanced as it could've been.
2. I feel the subject is the boy in the red shirt. He is an IPC student and is working on a lab for the class. I think he's the subject because he is working on the experiment and is in the top left quadrant so he follow the rule of thirds.
3. I think the subject is clear because there is empty space around him so he almost sticks out.
4. I could've taken the picture from the top of the ramp and then had the two boy on either side so the boys would be balanced better.
Framing
FRAMING:
1. I followed this rule very well.
2. The subject is the girl looking down at her book. She is studying the book for her english test the next period.
3. Since the girl is the only person in the photo, she is main focus which makes her the very apparent subject.
4. I did follow the rule pretty well but I would've still done things differently. I would've stood on a chair behind her so I would've gotten the whole desk.

Lines

LINES:
1. I don't think the rule of lines was represented very well in this photo. The lines are somewhat represented through the computer document, tiles on the floor, and the edges of the paper.
2. The subject is the computer and the hands on the computer because they are what the girl is working on and the main objects in the photo. The subject wouldn't be the girl because she's not actually in the picture.
3. I think subject is clear because the are a large part of the photograph.
4. I don't think I followed the rule very well because I wasn't think about the lines when I took the picture.

Rule of Thirds
RULE OF THIRDS:
1. I feel like the rule of third was represented well in this photo.
2. The subjects are the girl's face, and her journal. She's looking down at her work so the photo would have 2 subjects.
3. I think the subject is clear because the picture is filled with the subjects.
4. I think I followed the rule very well because the both subjects are in the corners which is part of the rule of thirds.

Simplicity
SIMPLICITY:
1. I represented simplicity well in my picture.
2. The subject is the girl because she is the only person in the photo and she takes up the whole screen.
3. I think the subject is very clear because she takes up the whole photo.
4. I think I followed the rule well because whole photo is just her. there is nothing that distracts the eye from the girl.

Merger
The hand coming out from the girl is someone else's hand. If it was hers, it would have to be twisted in an unnatural way.
